    Hybrid multi-objective trajectory optimization of low-thrust space mission design

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe overall goal of this dissertation is to develop multi-objective optimization algorithms for computing low-thrust trajectories. The thesis is motivated by the increasing number of space projects that will benefit from low-thrust propulsion technologies to gain unprecedented scientific, economic and social return. The low-cost design of such missions and the inclusion of concurrent engineering practices during the preliminary design phase demand advanced tools to rapidly explore different solutions and to benchmark them with respect to multiple conicting criteria. However, the determination of optimal low-thrust transfers is a challenging task and remains an active research field that seeks performance improvements. This work contributes to increase the efficiency of searching wide design spaces, reduce the amount of necessary human involvement, and enhance the capabilities to include complex operational constraints. To that end, the general low-thrust trajectory optimization problem is stated as a multi-objective Hybrid Optimal Control Problem. This formulation allows to simultaneously optimize discrete decisionmaking processes, discrete dynamics, and the continuous low-thrust steering law. Within this framework, a sequential two-step solution approach is devised for two different scenarios. The first problem considers the optimization of low-thrust multi-gravity assist trajectories. The proposed solution procedure starts by assuming a planar shape-based model for the interplanetary trajectory. A multi-objective heuristic algorithm combined with a gradient-based solver optimize the parameters de_ning the shape of the trajectory, the number and sequence of the gravity assists, the departure and arrival dates, and the launch excess velocity. In the second step, candidate solutions are deemed as initial guesses to solve the Nonlinear Programming Problem resulting from applying a direct collocation transcription scheme. In this step, the sequence of planetary gravity assists is known and provided by the heuristic search, dynamics is three-dimensional, and the steering law is not predefined. Operational constraints to comply with launch asymptote declination limits and fixed reorientation times during the transfer apply. The presented approach is tested on a rendezvous mission to Ceres, on a yby mission to Jupiter, and on a rendezvous mission to Pluto. Pareto-optimal solutions in terms of time of ight and propellant mass consumed (or alternatively delivered mass) are obtained. Results outperform those found in the literature in terms of optimality while showing the effectiveness of the proposed methodology to generate quick performance estimates. The second problem considers the simultaneous optimization of fully electric, fully chemical and combined chemical-electric orbit raising transfers between Earth's orbits is considered. In the first step of the solution approach, the control law of the electric engine is parameterized by a Lyapunov function. A multi-objective heuristic algorithm selects the optimal propulsion system, the transfer type, the low-thrust control history, as well as the number, orientation, and magnitude of the chemical firings. Earth's shadow, oblateness and Van-Allen radiation effects are included. In the second step, candidate solutions are deemed as initial guesses to solve the Nonlinear Programming Problem resulting from applying a direct collocation scheme. Operational constraints to avoid the GEO ring in combination to slew rate limits and slot phasing constraints are included. The proposed approach is applied to two transfer scenarios to GEO orbit. Pareto-optimal solutions trading of propellant mass, time of ight and solar-cell degradation are obtained. It is identified that the application of operational restrictions causes minor penalties in the objective function. Additionally, the analysis highlights the benefits that combined chemical-electric platforms may provide for future GEO satellites.El objetivo principal de esta trabajo es desarrollar algoritmos de optimización multi-objetivo para la obtención de trayectorias espaciales con motores de bajo empuje. La tesis está motivada por el creciente número de misiones que se van a beneficiar del uso de estas tecnologías para conseguir beneficios científicos, económicos y sociales sin precedentes. El diseño de bajo coste de dichas misiones ligado a los principios de ingeniería concurrente requieren herramientas computacionales avanzadas que exploren rápidamente distintas soluciones y las comparen entre sí respecto a varios criterios. Sin embargo, esta tarea permanece como un campo de investigación activo que busca continuamente mejoras de rendimiento durante el proceso. Este trabajo contribuye a aumentar la eficiencia cuando espacio de diseño es amplio, a reducir la participación humana requerida y a mejorar las capacidades para incluir restricciones operacionales complejas. Para este fin, el problema general de optimización de trayectorias de bajo empuje se presenta como un problema híbrido de control óptimo. Esta formulación permite optimizar al mismo tiempo procesos de toma de decisiones, dinámica discreta y la ley de control del motor. Dentro de este marco, se idea un algoritmo secuencial de dos pasos para dos escenarios diferentes. El primer problema considera la optimización de trayectorias de bajo empuje con múltiples y-bys. El proceso de solución propuesto comienza asumiendo un modelo plano y shape-based para la trayectoria interplanetaria. Un algoritmo de optimización heurístico y multi-objetivo combinado con un resolvedor basado en gradiente optimizan los parámetros de la espiral que definen la forma de la trayectoria, el número y la secuencia de las maniobras gravitacionales, las fechas de salida y llegada, y la velocidad de lanzamiento. En el segundo paso, las soluciones candidatas se usan como estimación inicial para resolver el problema de optimización no lineal que resulta de aplicar un método de transcripción directa. En este paso, las secuencia de y-bys es conocida y determinada por el paso anterior, la dinámica es tridimensional, y la ley de control no está prefinida. Además, se pueden aplicar restricciones operacionales relacionadas con las declinación de la asíntota de salida e imponer tiempos de reorientación fijos. Este enfoque es probado en misiones a Ceres, a Júpiter y a Plutón. Se obtienen soluciones óptimas de Pareto en función del tiempo de vuelo y la masa de combustible consumida (o la masa entregada). Los resultados obtenidos mejoran los disponibles en la literatura en términos de optimalidad, a la vez que reflejan la efectividad de la metodología a propuesta para generar estimaciones rápidas. El segundo problema considera la optimización simultanea de transferencias entre órbitas terrestres que usan propulsión eléctrica, química o una combinación de ambas. En el primer paso del método de solución, la ley de control del motor eléctrico se parametriza por una función de Lyapunov. Un algoritmo de optimización heurístico y multi-objetivo selecciona el sistema propulsivo óptimo, el tipo de transferencia, la ley de control del motor de bajo empuje, así como el número, la orientación y la magnitud de los impulsos químicos. Se incluyen los efectos de la sombra y de la no esfericidad de la Tierra, además de la radiación de Van-Allen. En el segundo paso, las soluciones candidatas se usan como estimación inicial para resolver el problema de optimización no lineal que resulta de aplicar un método de transcripción directa. El método de solución propuesto se aplica a dos transferencias a GEO diferentes. Se obtienen soluciones óptimas de Pareto con respecto a la masa de combustible, el tiempo de vuelo y la degradación de las células solares. Se identifican que la aplicación de las restricciones operacionales penaliza mínimamente la función objetivo.     A survey on low-thrust trajectory optimization approaches

    In this paper, we provide a survey on available numerical approaches for solving low-thrust trajectory optimization problems. First, a general mathematical framework based on hybrid optimal control will be presented. This formulation and their elements, namely objective function, continuous and discrete state and controls, and discrete and continuous dynamics, will serve as a basis for discussion throughout the whole manuscript. Thereafter, solution approaches for classical continuous optimal control problems will be briefly introduced and their application to low-thrust trajectory optimization will be discussed. A special emphasis will be placed on the extension of the classical techniques to solve hybrid optimal control problems. Finally, an extensive review of traditional and state-of-the art methodologies and tools will be presented. They will be categorized regarding their solution approach, the objective function, the state variables, the dynamical model, and their application to planetocentric or interplanetary transfers

    DROMO formulation for planar motions: Solution to the Tsien Problem

    The two-body problem subject to a constant radial thrust is analyzed as a planar motion. The description of the problem is performed in terms of three perturbation methods: DROMO and two others due to Deprit. All of them rely on Hansen?s ideal frame concept. An explicit, analytic, closed-form solution is obtained for this problem when the initial orbit is circular (Tsien problem), based on the DROMO special perturbation method, and expressed in terms of elliptic integral functions. The analytical solution to the Tsien problem is later used as a reference to test the numerical performance of various orbit propagation methods, including DROMO and Deprit methods, as well as Cowell and Kustaanheimo?Stiefel methods

    Insight into the Degradation Mechanisms of Atomic Layer Deposited TiO2 as Photoanode Protective Layer

    Around 100 nm thick TiO layers deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD) have been investigated as anticorrosion protective films for silicon-based photoanodes decorated with 5 nm NiFe catalyst in highly alkaline electrolyte. Completely amorphous layers presented high resistivity; meanwhile, the ones synthesized at 300 °C, having a fully anatase crystalline TiO structure, introduced insignificant resistance, showing direct correlation between crystallization degree and electrical conductivity. The conductivity through crystalline TiO layers has been found not to be homogeneous, presenting preferential conduction paths attributed to grain boundaries and defects within the crystalline structure. A correlation between the conductivity atomic force microscopy measurements and grain interstitials can be seen, supported by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy cross-sectional images presenting defective regions in crystalline TiO grains. It was found that the conduction mechanism goes through the injection of electrons coming from water oxidation from the electrocatalyst into the TiO conduction band. Then, electrons are transported to the Si/SiO/TiO interface where electrons recombine with holes given by the pn-Si junction. No evidences of intra-band-gap states in TiO responsible of conductivity have been detected. Stability measurements of fully crystalline samples over 480 h in anodic polarization show a continuous current decay. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy allows to identify that the main cause of deactivation is associated with the loss of TiO electrical conductivity, corresponding to a self-passivation mechanism. This is proposed to reflect the effect of OH ions diffusing in the TiO structure in anodic conditions by the electric field. This fact proves that a modification takes place in the defective zone of the layer, blocking the ability to transfer electrical charge through the layer. According to this mechanism, a regeneration of the degradation process is demonstrated possible based on ultraviolet illumination, which contributes to change the occupancy of TiO electronic states and to recover the defective zone's conductivity. These findings confirm the connection between the structural properties of the ALD-deposited polycrystalline layer and the degradation mechanisms and thus highlight main concerns toward fabricating long-lasting metal-oxide protective layers for frontal illuminated photoelectrodes

    Albiglutide and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (Harmony Outcomes): a double-blind, randomised placebo-controlled trial

    Background: Glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists differ in chemical structure, duration of action, and in their effects on clinical outcomes. The cardiovascular effects of once-weekly albiglutide in type 2 diabetes are unknown. We aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of albiglutide in preventing cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke. Methods: We did a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial in 610 sites across 28 countries. We randomly assigned patients aged 40 years and older with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (at a 1:1 ratio) to groups that either received a subcutaneous injection of albiglutide (30–50 mg, based on glycaemic response and tolerability) or of a matched volume of placebo once a week, in addition to their standard care. Investigators used an interactive voice or web response system to obtain treatment assignment, and patients and all study investigators were masked to their treatment allocation. We hypothesised that albiglutide would be non-inferior to placebo for the primary outcome of the first occurrence of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, which was assessed in the intention-to-treat population. If non-inferiority was confirmed by an upper limit of the 95% CI for a hazard ratio of less than 1·30, closed testing for superiority was prespecified. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT02465515. Findings: Patients were screened between July 1, 2015, and Nov 24, 2016. 10 793 patients were screened and 9463 participants were enrolled and randomly assigned to groups: 4731 patients were assigned to receive albiglutide and 4732 patients to receive placebo. On Nov 8, 2017, it was determined that 611 primary endpoints and a median follow-up of at least 1·5 years had accrued, and participants returned for a final visit and discontinuation from study treatment; the last patient visit was on March 12, 2018. These 9463 patients, the intention-to-treat population, were evaluated for a median duration of 1·6 years and were assessed for the primary outcome. The primary composite outcome occurred in 338 (7%) of 4731 patients at an incidence rate of 4·6 events per 100 person-years in the albiglutide group and in 428 (9%) of 4732 patients at an incidence rate of 5·9 events per 100 person-years in the placebo group (hazard ratio 0·78, 95% CI 0·68–0·90), which indicated that albiglutide was superior to placebo (p<0·0001 for non-inferiority; p=0·0006 for superiority). The incidence of acute pancreatitis (ten patients in the albiglutide group and seven patients in the placebo group), pancreatic cancer (six patients in the albiglutide group and five patients in the placebo group), medullary thyroid carcinoma (zero patients in both groups), and other serious adverse events did not differ between the two groups. There were three (<1%) deaths in the placebo group that were assessed by investigators, who were masked to study drug assignment, to be treatment-related and two (<1%) deaths in the albiglutide group. Interpretation: In patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, albiglutide was superior to placebo with respect to major adverse cardiovascular events. Evidence-based glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists should therefore be considered as part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in patients with type 2 diabetes.     Multiobjective Low-Thrust Interplanetary Trajectory Optimization based on Generalized Logaritmic Spirals

    The multi-objective optimal design of low-thrust multigravity-assist trajectories is formulated within the hybrid optimal control framework. A new automated solution strategy for this problem is proposed in this Paper based on a two-step algorithm. In the first step, the trajectory is assumed to be a generalized logarithmic spiral. A heuristic global search algorithm combined with nonlinear programming are in charge of optimizing the set of parameters defining the spirals as well as the number, sequence, and configuration of the gravity assists. In the second step, candidate solutions are regarded as initial guesses for a direct collocation method, in which the problem is transcribed into a nonlinear programming problem by discretization, considering the full dynamics and the complete set of constraints. The presented approach is tested on a rendezvous mission to the asteroid Ceres, allowing a Mars flyby, and on a flyby mission to Jupiter, allowing multiple flybys on different bodies. Pareto-optimal solutions in terms of time of flight and propellant mass consumed are obtained for both cases. Results outperform those found in the literature in terms of optimality while showing the effectiveness of the proposed methodology to generate quick performance estimates for preliminary studies and accurate solutions for the detailed design.This work has been partially supported by Spanish Government through grant number TRA2014-58413-C2-2-R.     La sordera de origen no orgánico ha sido objeto de estudio por parte de otorrinolaringología con el fin de establecer un diagnóstico certero. Sin embargo, pocos artículos versan sobre la salud mental del sujeto que la sufre. Entre las causas subyacentes se diferencian el trastorno por conversión, trastorno facticio y la simulación. En el presente artículo se expone el caso de una mujer cuyo malestar emocional esbozará variopintos síntomas conversivos, destacando la pérdida de audición por su relativa infrecuencia. Se expondrán las dificultades encontradas en su diagnóstico clínico y manejo terapéutico. Se pondrá en evidencia la importancia de trabajar conjuntamente con el resto de especialistas y entorno más cercano de la paciente

    Hybrid multi-objective orbit-raising with operational constraints

    The optimal design of orbit raising trajectories is formulated within a multi-objective hybrid optimal control framework. The spacecraft can be equipped with chemical, electric or combined chemical-electric propulsion systems. The model incorporates realistic effects of the space environment and complex operational constraints. An automated solution strategy, based on two sequential steps, is proposed for this problem. In the first step, operational constraints are not enforced and the control law of the electric engine is parameterized by a Lyapunov function. A heuristic global search algorithm selects the propulsion system and optimizes the guidance law. Approximate Pareto-optimal solutions are obtained trading off propellant mass, time of flight and solar-cell degradation. In the second step, candidate solutions are deemed as initial guesses to solve the nonlinear programming problem resulting from direct transcription of the operationally constrained problem. The proposed approach is applied to two transfer scenarios to the geostationary orbit. Results show the effectiveness of the methodology to generate not only rapid performance estimates for preliminary trade studies, but also accurate calculations for the detailed design. Additionally, it is identified that the application of operational restrictions causes minor penalties in the objective function

    Currículum, enseñanza y saber : perspectivas futuras

    La ponencia se enmarca en un Proyecto de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Universidad Nacional de La Plata titulado "El estudio de la política curricular de Educación Física en Argentina: análisis, problematización y conceptualización de principios para un nuevo currículum". Este proyecto toma los estudios realizados anteriormente por el equipo de investigación (Emiliozzi, 2014, 2022, Emiliozzi, Urruty, Aramayo, 2019), los problematiza, y efectúa un desplazamiento epistemológico para conceptualizar una serie de principios para un currículum futuro.Los estudios sobre política curricular nos habían permitido identificar que se hace evidente un auge de las subjetividades y el Yo que conforman otros modos de pensar el sujeto, la enseñanza y la educación, hasta el punto tal que se hacen "impugnaciones de la enseñanza y desplazamientos de la pedagogía" (Cf. Vassiliades, 2020); que llevan a la omisión del saber como acontecimiento de la enseñanza y al supuesto de que en el sujeto hay un interior, un cerebro cognitivo y uno emocional que hacen al aprendizaje. Desde nuestra perspectiva, el saber es lo que permite el acontecimiento de la enseñanza (Behares 2008,2013, Bordoli, 2013, 2007, Dogliotti y Torrón, 2015, Emiliozzi 2016) y entrar en un marco de ideas que hacen al acto educativo (Southwell 2020, Herbart 1935, Behares 2015); pero es lo que la política curricular omite al colocar las competencias, capacidades, propiedades corporales como ejes organizadores del currículum. Por ello, nos propusimos como objetivo elaborar una serie de principios de organización curricular. Se trató de buscar una posición desde la cual hablar sobre el currículum,sobre el currículum de la Educación Física, y encontrar algunas orientaciones que nos señalen otra educación del cuerpo.El escrito desarrolla esos principios y presenta las bases teóricas desde las cuales se sostienen. Los principios que buscaremos desarrollar son: La delimitación del objeto, el acontecimiento de las prácticas y la relación con el cuerpo, el saber cultural (prácticas campamentiles y al aire libre, juego, gimnasia, deporte, otras posibilidades de prácticas corporales como la danza), y la posición teórica sobre la enseñanza.Fil: Emiliozzi, María Valeria.
